San Francisco, One Hill at a Time
Fog rolling over the bridge, cable cars climbing steep streets, and a city that looks best on foot.
You see it before you reach it — the bridge standing in the water, the city behind it going soft in the haze. From the headlands on the far side, the whole bay opens up at once: orange steel, blue water, and a skyline you can only just make out through the fog.
It's a city that rewards walking. Every street ends somewhere interesting, every hill has a view at the top, and the light keeps changing as the weather rolls in and out.
How to Spend the Days
Cross the bridge early, while the air is still clear, and stop on the far side to look back at the city. Come down for coffee at the ferry market, where the counters are full of things you didn't know you wanted. Ride a cable car up the steepest street you can find, then walk back down.
In the afternoon, follow the water out to the ocean side, where the sand is grey and the wind is not polite. In the evening, the light turns low and gold and every painted house looks like a postcard.
Where to Stay
Pick a base near a cable car line, so the hills stop being a problem and start being part of the fun. A room with a window onto the bay is worth the extra, and a neighbourhood with a good bakery downstairs beats a smarter address further away.
For Brands & Hotels
The bridge is one of the few landmarks that still photographs beautifully in any light, and the city is full of rooms with a view. A few days spent moving through a neighbourhood — the walk, the window, the coffee before the plan — makes content that looks like somewhere you'd genuinely want to be.
